Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant Increased

Homeowners living in rural and off-gas properties can now benefit from even greater government support through the increased Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant when replacing older fossil-fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives.

At HEART, we welcome the latest increase in government support and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant designed to help more households replace older oil and LPG boilers with modern air source heat pumps.

From 21 July 2026, the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) now offers a £9,000 grant for eligible homes in England and Wales that rely on oil or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for heating. Previously worth £7,500, the increased funding is designed to make heat pumps more affordable for households that are not connected to the mains gas network.

A Boost for Off-Gas Households

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides financial support to help homeowners move away from traditional fossil fuel heating and install more energy-efficient, renewable technologies.

Under the latest changes, eligible off-gas properties can now receive up to £9,000 towards the installation of either:

  • An air source heat pump
  • A ground source heat pump

Many homes outside the mains gas network face higher heating costs and fewer low-carbon options. This enhanced grant aims to reduce those barriers and encourage more households to make the switch to cleaner, future-ready heating.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the increased Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, your property must:

  • Be located in England or Wales.
  • Not be connected to the mains gas network.
  • Have no active or capped gas supply.
  • Not be connected to a heat network.
  • Not be a new-build or self-build property.
  • Use oil or LPG as its main source of heating.

As part of the application process, your installer will confirm that the property meets the scheme requirements and that it is currently heated by oil or LPG.

Which Technologies Are Covered?

The enhanced £9,000 grant is available for:

  • Air source heat pumps
  • Ground source heat pumps

Other technologies, including biomass boilers and air-to-air heat pumps, continue to be supported under the existing Boiler Upgrade Scheme where eligible, but they do not qualify for the increased funding.

Key Dates to Remember

The higher grant applies to new Boiler Upgrade Scheme voucher applications submitted on or after 21 July 2026.

Applications that received a voucher before this date remain eligible for the previous £7,500 grant.

The enhanced £9,000 support is currently scheduled to run until 31 March 2027, when the government will review future funding arrangements for off-gas properties.
